The task and requirements

Developing deepwater oilfields is increasingly economically viable. This implicates operations in remote areas. The client required a vessel suitable for world wide service but specifically designed for the Atlantic Triangle, comprising West Africa, Brazil and the US Gulf. Tasks are deepwater rigid reeled pipe lay and construction while the ship must also be capable of flex lay.

The concept

Despite its compact design, the Seven Oceans has a high payload and good seakeeping characteristics. The pipelay installation is fully integrated in the design of the vessel, in the sense that the vessel is designed around the installation. At the same time the seakeeping characteristics of the vessel have been used as input for the design of the 3500 MT reel and the adjustable pipelay ramp aft.

The redundancy required by the client was substantially higher than the usual DP2. The Seven Oceans design philosophy with respect to layout and redundancy is based on DP3 philosophy with only some minor items to be added for the complete DP3 class notation. The Seven Oceans is a multifunctional deepwater rigid reeled pipe lay and construction vessel, also capable of flex lay

Innovative solutions

The ship has an integrated diesel electric power generation system, and a propulsion and manoeuvring system with triple redundancy built in. A full width ROV hangar is located aft of the accommodation block. Vertical recessed ROV deployment rails are fitted in the ship’s sides on port and starboard.

A 400 MT deepwater offshore crane is located amidships on the port side of the vessel. Two additional large cranes are provided to serve the working deck.

The vessel is a stable platform with a large payload due to the hull form. The stability of the vessel can be controlled and adapted to different loading conditions by means of upper and lower ballast tanks in the sides, while her motions can be further reduced by two independent anti-rolling tanks.
