The task and requirements

With a trend towards heavier installation work in wide spread geographical areas such as West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico and South East Asia, a larger, faster and more powerful version of the successful ‘Toisa’ sisters is required, this time with a high capacity sub sea crane. The owner wishes to invest in a flexible high performance vessel, while maintaining a ‘repeat’ effect to reduce cost.

The concept

An increase in length by 17 meters is incorporated in the structural design, providing the extra deadweight and deck space. Modified hull lines fore and aft and the addition of a bulbous bow give the vessel a transit speed of 14 knots. Most challenging for the yard’s design team is the requirement to lift 400 tonnes with an offshore mast crane situated on the aft deck.

Innovative solutions

The modified hull lines improve the propulsive efficiency by ten percent and provide room for a pair of 3000 kW thrusters. An all-comprehensive stabilising and anti-roll system has been installed to provide sufficient righting moment for the 400 t offshore crane. A fully redundant diesel electric power plant, DP and propulsion systems gives the Toisa Proteus a wide range of applications in the offshore installations and sub sea construction industry.
