Smit International is, besides its well known towing and salvage operations, active in offshore contracting. At the end of eighties, a multi-functional offshore platform is considered. Medium size installations, construction and maintenance work is targeted, and a design study results in the specification of a semi submersible design. The yard accepts design responsibility as part of the building contract.
As a result of a comprehensive marketing study the Smit Semi 1 and Smit Semi 2 are designed as semi submersible self-propelled offshore support vessels. The vessels shall be equipped for installation, diving/inspection, maintenance and repair duties. The vessels can be operated while automatically positioned by six anchors or alternatively by a redundant dynamic positioning system, controlling six electric azimuth thrusters.
The Smit Semi 1 and 2 are equipped with a moon pool, two diving facilities for up to 450 meters water depth and a 150-ton deck crane. The hulls are submersible to a draft of 12.6 meters, thus to withstand significant sea state conditions and to limit downtime. The 6 electrically driven thrusters and 6 mooring winches provide excellent dynamic positioning at various water depths.
