The route, the wish

With Stena Jutlandica, Stena Line AB intends to set new standards for RoRo Passenger Vessels. The ship will ply the company's crown route: Gothenburg - Frederikshavn, a 4 hour crossing. Seasonal fluctuations in passenger traffic and a possibility for future railway transport are typical design parameters. While international talks on ferry safety standards are taking place, the Owner decides to develop a ferry with the yard that will encompass all of the new rules under discussion.

The concept

Stena Jutlandica is the world's first ferry new building to comply fully with the Stockholm Agreement on ferry safety. A high freeboard and closable side lanes provide an unobstructed drive-through arrangement for cargo and car traffic. At night and in low season the ship is used for accompanied ro-ro freight, while in summer and weekends she operates as a ro-pax ferry. A logical split in the available public areas does provide a wide or a limited offering of services, with a proportional reduction in catering cost.

Specific solutions

Stena Jutlandica exceeds the requirements of the Stockholm Agreement without capacity restrictions. The upper cargo deck aft is equipped for transport of dangerous cargo. Four train tracks with a total length of 600 meters are flush mounted on main deck. A fully redundant four-engine installation gives the ship a speed of 21.8 knots. By installing an SCR installation for the reduction of exhaust emissions the ship has become a "green" ferry, in compliance with voluntary Baltic rules.
