For the first time Dutch shipbuilders deliver ro-pax vessels to the People's Republic of China. Dalian Marine transport Company (China Shipping) an Owner with a fleet of 43 vessels intends to connect the cities of Dalian, Yantai, and Tanjin Xingang by sea, crossings of 6-10 hours. Land transport takes several days. The ships are to be equipped for 900 passengers and able to transport cars, lorries and trailers on a single ro-ro deck.
The yard develops the design from its successful "Viamare" series, built by 3 years earlier. This proven design is perfectly suitable for the addition of an extensive passenger accommodation in European style. Two compact ro-pax vessels with high specifications are created.
The envisaged combination of accommodation and freight led to adaptations of the Viamare design. The watertight subdivision was refined, an additional accommodation deck was added and a special ramp arrangement enabled loading/unloading in ports with limited facilities.
