BornholmsTrafikken wishing to tender for the continuation of the concession concerning ferry services between Copenhagen and the island of Bornholm skimmed the market for second hand tonnage as the tender procedure only allowed 12 months from winning the tender till two vessels entering service. Merwede Shipyard convinced the Owner that it was able to deliver two new build vessels fully complying with the tender requirements and within the time constraint.
The HAMMERODDE and sister vessel DUEODDE have changed the traffic concept to the island of Bornholm. Foot and car passengers are stimulated to take the short cut via the Öresund-Ystad corridor to Rønne, the new handy-size ro-pax ferries being workhorses that primarily carry freight on the Køge-Rønne and Ystad-Rønne routes, but also serve as a back-up for the Ystad-Rønne fast craft VILLUM CLAUSEN. However, bearing the "ships are built to sail" message in mind, the new vessels also operate outside the Bornholm concession during daytime.
Hammerodde and Dueodde are compact "handy size" ro-pax vessels, optimised for multi-port operations with small harbours. Capacities are maximised within the limitations of the route. The vessel can be utilised as a freight ferry, taking 1200 Lane Metre of trailers. As a car/passenger ferry, she can accommodate up to 400 passengers and the vessel has been prepared for future conversion to 770 passengers. Specific solutions include the vessel was designed as a multi-port vessel, with an efficient ro-ro arrangement, a high deadweight, superb manoeuvrability and a flexible passenger accommodation. The vessels operate in tandem with the company's high-speed craft offering the island of Bornholm - mainland transit an unprecedented reliability year through.
