The route, the wish

Strintzis Lines of Greece, known for excellent passenger service and reliability, decides to enter the competitive field of high-speed ferries in the Adriatic Sea. To offer the same departures every day on the routes from Patras to the Italian ports of Ancona and Brindisi, It will be necessary to sail at speeds of 27-28 knots. This should however not be punished by excessive fuel consumption and passenger comfort has to be kept at the highest level. After merging into the Attica group and becoming Blue Star Ferries the new shareholders expect the ship to match with the group.

The concept

The yard develops a pair of fast cruise ferries, Blue Star 1 and 2. An optimum length/breadth ratio results in a ship with a high sustainable speed combined with excellent stability characteristics. Intensive cooperation with Owners and their interior architects results in an award-winning styling. An extraordinary request is made when the interior architecture is changed halfway the construction while the pre-season delivery of both ships is to be maintained.

Specific solutions

Sound naval architecture by the yard's designers and extensive tank testing resulted in an extremely fuel-efficient hull form: a 10% reduction in installed power is achieved. By a combination of measures taken at the design stage and in the ship's construction, Blue Star 1 is extremely quiet at her maximum speed. Flexibility of the project team enabled the drastic restyling. An innovative production method resulted in the ultra-fast delivery of two ships with an interval of 9 weeks only!
