The route, the wish

Time is of the essence on the busy Vogelflug Linie (Bee Line) between Puttgarden in Germany and Rødby in Denmark. Together with their Danish partners, German DFO/Scandlines wishes to replace 7 ships on this one-hour crossing. The ambitious goal is to reduce to 4 ships while increasing the transport capacity. New concepts for the ships and shore installations on either side are required.

The concept

Scandlines decides for double-ended ferries to reduce the transit time by 20 percent. This is achieved by eliminating the time-consuming double turning on one leg and by the introduction of an automatic mooring system. With an optimum routing ashore, a good layout on-board and an attractive offering of food and drinks, the Owner improves the passenger comfort and stimulates on-board spending. Being the quickest route between Copenhagen and Hamburg, every second hour the ferry provides a quick crossing of the Inter City train.

Specific solutions

For best manoeuvrability, acceleration and fuel efficiency, the Schleswig-Holstein & Deutschland were designed as a double-ended, diesel electric drive-through ferry. Four azimuth thrusters, each equipped with two counter-rotating propellers propel the ship. Superior free sailing and manoeuvring characteristics were obtained, resulting in a 15-minute or 25% reduction in transit time. The yard's interior architects designed a dedicated accommodation layout aimed at an unobstructed flow, minimum waiting times and excellent facilities.
